What is Vasectomy?

Vasectomy is a safe and highly effective outpatient procedure that takes about 20 minutes. After identifying and cutting the vas deferens, the ends of the vas are closed by ligation or fulguration and then replaced in the scrotal sac. How effective is a vasectomy?

Vasectomy offers important advantages over tubal steriliza- tion. The procedure is relatively low cost (it is the most cost- effective method) and can be performed in an office setting using local anesthesia. No entry into the peritoneal cavity occurs, and efficacy is easily verified when a semen sample confirms the absence of sperm. Until that time, another method of birth control must be used.
